Jay Z likes $300 champagne. So he buys the company

Written By maboko on Friday, November 7, 2014 | 10:54 PM

Music mogul Jay Z appreciates the finer things in life, including high-end Armand de Brignac champagne.
has purchased what could be described as the flashiest champagne company in the world -- Armand de Brignac.

The Armand de Brignac champagne company -- which sells its shiny gold bottles for about $300 each -- has long been favored by the rap artist and was featured prominently in one of his music videos back in 2006.

He's often seen in pictures sipping the drink with his wife Beyonce Knowles, and the couple famously hosted a fundraiser for President Obama that featured a wall lined with hundreds of Armand de Brignac bottles.

The owner of the brand -- New York-based Sovereign Brands -- confirmed the sale this week. The price of the deal was not disclosed.

The champagne -- also called "Ace of Spades" -- is crafted and marketed by a family-run vineyard in France that traces its roots back to 1763. The company employs fewer than 20 people.

Jay Z used to be a massive fan of Cristal, but that changed in 2006 when The Economist published disparaging comments from the head of the company that makes the champagne, Frederic Rouzaud.
"What can we do? We can't forbid people from buying it," Rouzaud told The Economist, when asked if hip-hop artists were tarnishing the high-end brand.

When Jay Z heard of the comments, he immediately stopped sipping Cristal and quickly switched to Armand de Brignac.

"We used their brand as a signifier of luxury and they got free advertising and credibility every time we mentioned it," he wrote in his 2010 book "Decoded." "We were trading cachet. But they didn't see it that way."

The 44-year-old New Yorker, born Shawn Carter, rose to fame through his music and now has business interests in fashion, entertainment and sports.

Forbes ranks him among the most powerful celebrities in the world, alongside Oprah Winfrey and LeBron James. But his wife Beyonce tops the Forbes ranking and was recently named the top-earning woman in the music industry after making $115 million in 2014.

Mother In Law’s Kate Kamau Still Rides On A Boda Boda Despite Owning a BMW

Catherine Kamau who plays the sensational Celina in Mother in Law may be swimming in money but old habits die hard.

The gorgeous actress and harpic ambassador took a ride on a boda boda recently despite owning a sweet BMW. The actress also landed a deal with PRC recently and that ought to have enlarged her bank account.

So why would a top actress choose to ride on the risky boda boda? Even a cab would have been better. Either way I think our celebrities need to act more like celebrities for the sake of a glamorous Kenyan showbiz industry like Hollywood or Nollywood.

Betty Bayo Explains How She Planted Sh310 Mbegu and Met The Lover of Her Life

Betty Bayo Explains How She Planted Sh310 Mbegu and Met The Lover of Her Life

Kenyans are not yet done with Victor Kanyari. They have dedicated their entire creativity on trolling the ‘miracles’ stage-manager. From twitter to Facebook, satirical memes have taken the center-stage.I came across a funny post on Facebook with the heading ’5 Minute Interview With Betty Bayo’ and it was sure a funny piece about how the two might have met, how they got married and the feeling Bayo has after his husband was found guilty of fooling his followers.

Here is the hilarious post that will leave you laughing out loud. Enjoy this social media humor

5  MINUTE INTERVIEW WITH BETTY BAYO
Q: Where did you meet your husband?
A: I called the number on the screen for a prayer request and he said he liked my voice.
Q: And then…?
A: He asked me to plant a seed of Kes. 310.00, which I did.
Q: And then…?
A: He then asked me to attend his church service and I agreed. So I went there with my friend and after the service he asked all first time visitors to remain behind. He took me to his house and told me that God had revealed to him that I was to be his wife.
Q: After how long did you get married?
A: A week after meeting him, he announced in church that he was getting married. I thought he was marrying someone else because he had not proposed to me. He told us all to attend the wedding.
Q: Oh my! At what point did you realize that you were the bride?
A: After the announcement he asked if he could introduce the bride. We all waited in anticipation so when he called my name the first time I thought I heard wrong. Then he called me again.
Q: So you didn’t have a chance to say ‘Yes’?
A: Since God had told him I would be his wife, I had no hesitation even though I was not ready.
Q: Did you know that he was involved in a scam?
A: I didn’t have a clue.
Q: Will you remain with him in light of what has happened?
A: We will see… If he goes to prison I don’t know how long I can wait.
Q: How has it been being married to Pastor Kanyari?
A: It is not easy being a pastor’s wife. Sometimes he is gone for three days because of the workload at the church… So many people to pray for… It is tough
Q: Who is your favourite local artiste?
A: Redsan… Oh sorry… Betty Bayo.
Q: Which book are you currently reading?
A: Mrs. Kiriamiti’s ‘My Life with a Criminal’.

Wormy weave infects woman's skull

Written By maboko on Sunday, December 1, 2013 | 8:24 PM

After a visit to a very upmarket hair salon in Kenya, Irene Myangoh didn't expect her worst nightmare to unravel... from her weave!

The biggest money maker is real human hair, and she splashed out  more than N5,500 on her Brazillian locks. But two weeks after, Irene started to feel very ill. She started suffering from severe headache that would not subside.

She saw a handful of private doctotrs and even specialists, undergoing brain scans and blood tests, but nothing could explain the increasingly bad pain.

Irene eventually received her diagnosis, worms from the weave had latched on to her scalp. "The worms were burrowing into her skull and after sending the samples to the lab they found that the hair had eggs from which the worms had hatched."

iReport TV says the doctor told her that the hair was probably from a corpse because those worms are usually found on dead bodies.  Efforts to reach her doctor for further comments were fruitless for he was said to be out of the country.

Chimamanda wows Kenyan fans at launch

The award-winning author of Half of a Yellow Sun, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, 36, is in town for a week of book launches, public lectures and a gala dinner to mark Kwani Trust 10th Year Anniversary.
"The best part about #KwaniAt10 is the fact that they got Chimamanda (Adichie) to come," tweeted popular literary blogger, Wamathai.

A sentiment many a book lover shares of the Nigerian author whose pen stroke is said to increasingly resemble her idol, the late Chinua Achebe.

Kwani Trust, describing itself as a Kenyan-based literary network dedicated to developing quality creative writing and committed to the growth of the creative industry, couldn't have picked a better guest to fly in.

Fairly little is known about her studies in medicine and pharmacy at the University of Nigeria.

Perhaps her degree in Communications and Masters in creative writing at Johns Hopkins University would be more palatable to her following in light of who she has become - Africa's daughter and much acclaimed teller of tales.

NTV Might Discontinue MALI TV Show

Written By maboko on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 | 10:40 PM

NTV's TV show Mali, is facing imminent cancellation following a combination of wrangles and under-performance. The actors went on a break in June, expecting to resume shooting this December. By now, they should have received new contracts, but that has not been forthcoming and signs are they will not be handed any.

NTV Might Discontinue MALI TV Show
Some actors have quit the production citing varied reasons. Tony Maina, who plays Mali CEO, is one of them. He said "There was a lot of belittlement and turning noses up at actors, which  was demoralizing and counter-productive. This, I felt was not right given that they were sacrificing a lot for the show both both fiscally and emotionally. Due to issues to do with alignment of perceptions and expectations, I felt that perhaps I may have given all I could under the circumstances. And since nothing was working, I decided to leave during the break because these differences  with production were beginning to become serious."

Alison Ngibuini, the show's producer, has also come under attack for her continued threats to the actors. She is said to have severally threatened to fire all her actors, leaving only the main cast. This she did repeatedly especially when the actors made demands for better pay.

Kenya's Highest Earning Entertainers

Eric Omondi - Sh 5 Million a month
In just a few years, Eric Omondi has become one of the most recognize names in the region comedy wise. Starting his professional career at Churchill Live, Omondi endeared himself to the public through his witty lines and hilarious jokes. Though his session on Churchill Live was just a few minutes, it was one of the reasons Kenyans saw through the entire show. The comedian briefly launched his own show at KTN and its performance is spoken in low tones. That did not deter him however, he continued doing more comedy including the occasional Night of a Thousand Laughs.

For his consistency, the corporate world has come to love him and they have continued to remunerate him well. His biggest deal yet is his current relationship with Airtel. Under the endorsement deal, Omondi will do TV commercials, radio voice overs and will soon be on billboards. " Apart from the television commercials, I also do the voice overs for their radio adverts. It's a deal we entered into and soon I will also be on billboards." He said.
The best thing about his contract is the zeros. From his own admission, the comedian is earning more than Sh 3 million a month from Airtel. " I cannot disclose the exact figure I stand to gain from this deal but I can say its above Sh 3 million per month."
Though the money from Airtel forms most of his monthly earning, the comedian is not short of alternative revenue source. He is a radio presenter at Radio Jambo where he earns six figures. Every month, he is invited to MC numerous events and again, he takes home six figures.

Jaguar - Sh 3 million per month
He is among the few privileged artistes to be part of the Niko na Safaricom Live Tours, where he is making a few millions every month. The concert kicked off last month and are set to go on for six months. Though the contract does not allow him to reveal the details, he termed it as 'too good to resist'.
The best part of it is that it does not stop him from getting into pacts with other parties. With this, the 'matapeli' singer has gone ahead and signed more deals with EABL and Unilever Kenya. " ..there is some really good money on the offing, where I get paid every month.. just like a salary. " he said.
The simple fact that Jaguar's music is doing quite well, the artiste also gets to do several performances nation wide every month. His price for this is in the region of Sh 300,000 per appearance. Recently, the businessman and artiste bought a Sh 35 million bungalow in Karen. He is also believed to own several businesses adding to his showbiz money.

Daddy Owen - Sh 2 million
Today, he is arguably the most popular gospel artiste in the country, and the highest paid for that matter. His price tag for every performance is Sh 250,000, among the highest in the country. Endorsements however bring him a lot more. For instance, in June this year, Daddy Owen was appointed the brand ambassador for Airtel Africa alongside other artistes. From this, he earned at least Sh 10 million.
Currently, the singer is in the negotiation stage with an unnamed local bank and he says the deal is much better than the Airtel one. " I am currently locked in negotiations with a local bank and I hope by the end of this it will be known" he said.

Suzzana Owiyo - 1 million+
She may not be the biggest musician in the country, but the fact that she signed a multi million contract with Reckitt Benckiser regarding their famous 'Harpic' brand made her one of the highest earners. Asked about her deal with harpic, Suzzana famously said that she would be making 'some millions'. The afro-fusion artist also recently signed a contract with Radio Africa, where she was to receive Sh 22 million worth of airtime, to publicize her Kenyan tour.

Wahu - 1 million +
Though its not clear how much the singer is making from her deal with Rexona, it is believed to be in the region of eight figures. The shooting of the advert itself was extravagant, taking her to Turkey and Thailand for the print and TV commercial respectively. Her contract includes appearing in all promotions; digital, online, print, and also taking part in their PR activities.

Others:
Daniel Ndambuki- Safaricom,Classic 105, Events, Churchill Live [Sh 2 million +]
Camp Mulla - Safaricom, Expensive performances [ Sh 4 million +]
Juliani [Sh 1 million +]
Jimmy Gait [Sh 800,000]
Erick Wainaina [ Sh 500,000]
.
Size 8 [ Sh 500,000]

How Britney Spears, Demi Lovato Are Bonding at X Factor

Written By maboko on Monday, June 18, 2012 | 11:27 PM

Britney Spears and Demi Lovato have become partners in crime since officially joining The X Factor in May At the Kansas City, Missouri auditions June 8, X Factor UK judge Louis Walsh, 59, filled in for an ill Simon Cowell, 52, and taught the two pop stars a funny game he likes to play on the European version of the reality hit, Us Weekly has learned.

According to a source, the judges secretly chose a word before each contestant performed and then tried to use it during their critiques. The more difficult the word, the better. "Every time one of them said the word, they all started giggling like naughty school children."

Spears started the game by choosing the word "tiger." Judge L.A. Reid, 56, told one contestant "he looks like a tiger in his tank," which a giggling Lovato followed up by saying, "I can see a little tiger action."

Spears was next to chime in, saying "he was like a big tiger." She and Lovato had trouble keeping a straight face and were laughing uncontrollably, per the source.

The mischief continued when Lovato chose the word "umbrella." Walsh told the contestant, "You remind me of Rihanna -- that 'Umbrella' girl." Lovato then told her, "You're the umbrella to my rain," only to be one-upped by Spears, who said, "You're my umbrella to everything."

The judges also chose the words "slinky," "punk rock," "caution" and "mountain."

"Demi, Britney and L.A. enjoyed the game, but no one is sure if Simon will be too happy with Louis for leading everyone astray," a set source tells Us. "He has been doing the X Factor in the UK for nine years and everyone loves him, but he's always making trouble!"

If anything, it gave "Criminal" singer Spears, 30, and "Give Your Heart a Break" chart topper Lovato, 19, a chance to put rumors of backstage feuds to rest.

"Britney and Demi are getting along great," an insider tells Us. "Whenever they aren't filming, Demi and Britney are chatting and hanging out. . . They are seriously bonding big time. It's nice to see."
